Running a local business is rewarding, but can also be incredibly lonely and stressful. You’ve seen the tips about how to manage your time, reduce stress, delegate, and take time away to recharge yourself. But when it all comes down, there is ONE secret to happiness as a local business owner.

The crew over at Soul Pancake decided to run a test on what makes people happy. They gathered volunteers and measured their initial happiness. The volunteers were then asked to think of someone who had an amazing, positive influence in their lives and to write down why that person was so important.

Soul Pancake then surprised the volunteers. They had to call the people they wrote about and read out loud what they wrote down. You’ll have to watch the video to see the results, but the takeaway is that …

Yep, it’s really just that simple. Thanksgiving is just a couple days away. The holidays can be an especially stressful time for local businesses, so take a moment and think of someone you are thankful for. Write down why they are important to you and then actually tell them. It could be your spouse, business partner, family member, close friend, or even your customers.

As for me, I’m grateful for my amazing wife and daughters who always support and love me even when I’m stressed out. I’m grateful that I live in a country where I have the opportunity to actually start a business. I’m grateful for my health, for the incredible blessings all around me, and for a God who loves me despite my faults. And I’m especially grateful for all of you … the first people to be part of the LMI family.
